Adam Drake – Founder & CEO of the Balanced Choice Program

Our Story

After fifteen years working in theatre, fitness and community engagement, Balanced Choice founder Adam Drake had established a reputation as an arts leader with a rare ability to forge connections with people from all walks of life.

His unique skillset saw him employed by leading national performing arts companies such as Queensland Theatre Company, Zeal Theatre and the Australian Theatre for Young People, while also delivering programs in remote communities focussed on wellbeing and personal development. This included a decision to spend 18 months managing the YMCA and gym in Tennant Creek.

In July 2014, while living in Darwin, Adam was asked to develop a program that could help the young men in Dondale Youth Detention Centre. Adam challenged himself to create an engagement process that would connect with disadvantaged, disruptive, and often traumatised young people. He set himself the goal of quickly establishing relationships founded on trust, then working side-by-side to identify personal values that could assist with emotional regulation and inform positive life choices. He decided to combine his skills in fitness and in theatre.

He called it, The Balanced Choice Program

With detainees requesting more sessions and staff reporting positive behaviour changes, demand for Adam’s skills grew, leading to invitations to work in the adult prison, with youth‑justice services, schools and youth engagement programs like the Northern Territory Youth Roundtable.

As demand for his services increased, he needed to identify and train staff with a very specific set of skills. He needed a team with the capacity to engage with anyone, from any background, able to forge meaningful personal connections founded on trust, then lead a process of self-reflection and goal setting to make positive personal changes. They needed to use fitness and creative play as their professional toolkit.

While running his programs, Adam sought people with the temperament, discipline and heart to model Balanced Choice values. Over time he recruited staff from the NT Youth Roundtable, the gym and the youth justice system allowing the program to expand into every State and Territory.

In 2024 Jason was given license to establish "Balanced Choice South East Region" to develop programs in South Australia and Victoria. Sharing Adam’s deep understanding of the principles that make Balanced Choice programs successful, Jason has rapidly grown Balanced Choice across youth justice, education and throughcare in the Southern States.

In 2025 Adam recruited Fraser Corfield to the role of Executive Director. Long time friends, the two have known each other since Adam graduated University in the 1990’s. Fraser is one of Australia’s most experienced executives specialising in applying the arts for social impact.

Balanced Choice continues to grow, delivering resident programs across the NT, QLD, SA and VIC, along with one off workshops nationwide.

“If you can be in the same room as Adam Drake you're in a privileged space. He will challenge the way you see and think about things. Adam is clearly a person who takes it back to basics. Simplify the process to get the best results and  apply them where those results are most needed.”
